Die schöne Müllerin : Lustspiel in einem Akt, ca. 1840s, 1873-1895.

The German play is an adaptation of the French play La Meunière de Marly, by Mélesville and Duveyrier. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy ([Berlin]: L. W. Both, n.d.; Both's Bühnen-Repertoir No. 81), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 4 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Marquis de la Gaillardière; Marquise, seine Gattin; Denise, die Müllerin; and Jean, Neffe der Müllerin. (Additional characters are: Guillaume, Müllerbursche; and zwei Piqueurs.) The published copy probably dates from the 1840s. On the last page is a note about the translation, from the publisher L. W. Both (actually, Schneider himself), according to which the original French play is based on a story by Paul de Kock (the title of the story could not be ascertained). The role books are labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from 1873 until at least the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and who also ran a theater lending library. The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Names of actors and actresses noted on the front of role books reflect up to 4 casts in Philadelphia over time, the earliest of which apparently performed in 1873-1875 (the presence of the actors Hagemann, Jünger, and Weyand suggest that early period) other casts may have performed later in the 1870s, in the 1880s, and possibly later (some names could not be placed). See also a theater newspaper documenting a performance at Turner Halle, Philadelphia, in May 1881 (folder 702).
